I love love love gummies. Gummy bears. Gummy worms. Sour Patch Kids. All delicious. However, I don't love the weird chemicals and dyes that typically go into these lovely little treasures. So, you can imagine my delight when I found a recipe for HOMEMADE gummies. Not only are they delicious, but because I use a grass-fed gelatin, raw honey, and all natural ingredients, they're even pretty nutritious. I'm making a batch each weekend from here on out so that I will have them on hand for a great, easy, labor snack.
These gummies are a bit on the sour side - which I love. You could perhaps add more honey or change out the fruit juice being used to make them sweeter, if that's what you'd prefer. The grass-fed gelatin provides a great dose of healthy, well-balanced protein. And for some added flavor and nutrition, I decided to also throw in some Emergen-C. I happened to have "Super Orange" on hand, which added to the acid/tart nature of the final product, but you could also switch up the type you used to get a ton of different flavor options! You could certainly leave this out, but I can't vouch for the intensity of the flavor if you opt to just use the fruit juice!
Final note; you can definitely get little molds and lightly grease them with coconut oil before pouring your gelatin mix in if you want cute little shapes. I decided to just use a loaf pan lined with plastic wrap. Despite using such a small pan, this recipe yielded fairly thin final gummies (maybe a quarter of an inch?). They're delicious, but I will probably double the recipe in the future, still using the loaf pan, to "bulk" them up. :)
Homemade Sour Gummies!
adapted from Mommypotamus; yield will depend on your choice of mold
1/3 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice (I think it took about 3 lemons)
3 Tbsp grass-fed gelatin
2-3 Tbsp honey (depending on how sweet/sour you want them to be and if you add the Emergen-C)
1 packet of Emergen-C
In a small saucepan, add all of your ingredients. Whisk over medium heat until there are no lumps and the mixture is smooth and melty. Stir constantly.
Pour into your prepared pan/mold and pop into the freezer to set for about 5-10 minutes. If you used a loaf pan, remove from the pan and cut into desired shapes/pieces.
Gummies can be stored at room temperature after they set or in the fridge (I've been keeping them in an airtight container on my counter!). Gummies - yum!!!
